On Page Search Engine Optimization (SEO) part 2

On Page Search Engine Optimization (SEO) part 2

5. URLs

A URL (Uniform Resource Locator), more commonly known as a "web address", specifies the location of a resource (such as a web page) on the internet. The URL also specifies how to retrieve that resource, also known as the "protocol", such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, etc.

Why do URLs matter for SEO?

There are 3 main benefits of URLs:

1. Improved user experience

A well-crafted URL provides both humans and search engines an easy-to-understand indication of what the destination page will be about

2. Rankings

URLs are a minor ranking factor search engines use when determining a particular page or resource's relevance to a search query.

3. Links

Some websites (like Facebook, for example), may leave shared links completely unformatted. Unoptimized, semantically inaccurate URLs can look unwieldy, and instead of garnering clicks they actually deter them. Human-readable URLs provide users a better idea of what they'll be getting when they click the link.

6. Footer Optimization

Footer Links are Quick Navigation Links. We need to add the links in the footer which are the best pages as per user engagement and convert users in leads. Contact Us should be the part of Footer Links. For Local business related site, Business address and phone number are must. Put limited links (important pages) and there is no harm in Footer Linking.

7. Breadcrumb navigation

A type of text-based Web site navigation that breaks the site into links of categories and sub-categories allowing major categories of information to be linked in a range of sequential order. Breadcrumb navigation is displayed to the user, so they can easily see exactly where that Web page is located within the Web site. While many types of Web sites use a breadcrumb navigation, it is becoming increasingly common for electronic commerce Web sites to display categories of products in this way.

  <li><a href="#">Pictures</a></li>
  <li><a href="#">Summer 15</a></li>
  <li>Italy</li>
</ul>

8. Server Optimization

One of the first things we do when we start doing SEO for a new client is check out the server that the website sits on. Some of the things we look for on a server:

  • old websites that still might be indexed
  • file permissions
  • folders, images, and other resources
  • the overall file/folder hierarchy
  • anything else that might be out of place

Some of the most popular status codes from an SEO standpoint are:
HTTP Status CodeReason
200OK
301Moved Permanently (Redirected)
302Temporary Redirect
403Forbidden
404Not Found
500Internal Server Error
502Bad Gateway
503Service Unavailable

9. Headings

From a readability and overall usability perspective, headings help organize large sections of content so that they are easier to read. There are a number of headings to choose from when structuring your page from the h1 tag all the way to the h6 page. Many SEO’s recommend that you use at least 1 H1 tag per page, and that a keyword should be present in that heading.
